I’ve managed to get this far without ever carrying an interest-bearing credit card balance. But I’ve taken advantage of more 0% APR introductory promotions than I can count though, and I know how to spot a great opportunity when I see one.
The Truist Future Credit Card is such an opportunity. Though if I’m being honest, not an earth-shattering one, and one made less attractive by the card’s other deficiencies.
Still: If you’re ready to get serious about paying down high-interest credit card balances or need to finance a big purchase and hope to avoid interest in the process, the Truist Future card is made for you. Here’s what you need to know about it to make an informed decision about applying (or not).
What Is the Truist Future Credit Card?
The Truist Future Credit Card is a low APR credit card with a long 0% APR purchase and balance transfer promotion stretching 15 months from account opening. It’s designed for people who need to transfer and pay down high-interest balances from existing credit card accounts and those looking to finance bigger purchases while minimizing interest charges.
The Truist Future card doesn’t have a regular rewards program, so it’s not appropriate for people seeking a direct return on spending. But it also has no annual fee, which means it won’t cost anything to keep in reserve if and when you need to use it.
What Sets the Truist Future Credit Card Apart
The Truist Future Credit Card isn’t groundbreaking and in fact has no unique features that truly “set it apart.” Its most distinctive attributes relate to its 0% APR promotion and low ongoing APR:
- 0% APR for 15 Months From Account Opening on Eligible Purchases and Balance Transfers. The Truist Future card has matching 15-month 0% APR intro promotions for purchases and balance transfers. The promotional rate applies to all purchases made within the first 15 months and to balance transfers made within the first 60 days of account opening (with the 0% APR period lasting the full 15 months from account opening).
- Low Ongoing APR. The Truist Future card has a relatively low ongoing APR, though variable and dependent on your creditworthiness. I always counsel against carrying interest-bearing balances unless absolutely necessary, but if you must, this is a decent card to do so with.
- Access to Truist Deals. Truist Deals is Truist’s in-house shopping and affiliate rewards portal. It’s not groundbreaking by any means, but certainly worth checking out if you want to save on purchases you’d make anyway.
Key Features of the Truist Future Credit Card
Keep reading for more details on the Truist Future card’s main features, including its 0% APR promotion and Truist Deals.
Intro APR Offer
The Truist Future Credit Card has twin 0% APR intro offers for purchases and balance transfers. Both stretch 15 months from account opening, but qualifying balance transfers must be made within the first 60 days.
A 3% balance transfer fee applies to all eligible balance transfers. That’s still much less than the minimum APR you’d pay on a nonpromotional balance transfer though.
Ongoing APR
This card’s ongoing APR is variable and credit-dependent. See rates and fees for the latest APR information.
Important Fees
This card has no annual fee or foreign transaction fee. Other fees may apply; see rates and fees.
Other Security and Payment Features
This card comes with some useful (if more or less standard) security and payment features:
- Customizable card controls for enhanced security
- Zero fraud liability (backed by Visa)
- Contactless payment functionality
- Mobile wallet compatibility with Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Samsung Pay
Truist’s banner below has more details. Note that the “extra rewards” and “star benefits” features aren’t available on the Truist Future card.
Credit Required
This card requires good to excellent credit. It’s not designed for people with limited credit, nor those with impaired or even fair credit.
Advantages of the Truist Future Credit Card
Let’s review the key advantages of the Truist Future card.
- Long 0% APR Intro Promotion for Purchases and Balance Transfers. This is the Truist Future card’s signature benefit and, in my opinion, the only true selling point over similar cards.
- Relatively Low Ongoing APR. If you must carry an interest-bearing credit card balance, this is the card to do it with. Keep it in reserve for emergencies.
- No Annual Fee. Not particularly unusual, but definitely welcome, especially after the 0% APR intro period ends.
- No Foreign Transaction Fee. If you travel outside the U.S. or patronize merchants based overseas, you’ll appreciate the 0% foreign transaction fee here.
- Access to Truist Deals. Truist Deals isn’t a regular rewards program, but it’s the only way to earn a direct return on spending with this card.
Disadvantages of the Truist Future Credit Card
Consider these disadvantages before you apply for the Truist Future card.
- No Regular Rewards Program. The Truist Future card has no regular rewards program. Everyday spending won’t net you anything here.
- No Spend-Based Welcome Offer. The Truist Future card doesn’t have a spend-based welcome offer either. Some competing 0% APR credit cards offer statement credits after you clear a predetermined spending threshold during the first 3 or 4 months.
- Few Additional Perks. This card has few value-added benefits to speak of other than what comes standard with Visa Signature credit cards.
How the Truist Future Credit Card Stacks Up
Before you apply for the Truist Future Credit Card, see how it compares to another popular low APR credit card with a long 0% interest promotion: the Chase Slate Edge Credit Card.
Truist Future | Slate Edge | |
0% APR Promotion | 15 months on purchases and balance transfers | 18 months on purchases and balance transfers |
Ongoing APR | Relatively low | Moderate |
Potential for Interest Rate Reduction | No | Yes, with responsible card use over time |
Annual Fee | $0 | $0 |
Foreign Transaction Fee | 0% | 3% |
Other Alternatives to Consider
Not sure either Truist Future or Slate Edge is right for you? Consider these popular alternatives instead. Each has a long 0% APR intro promotion on purchases, balance transfers, or both.
Final Word
The Truist Future Credit Card is a solid choice if you need to pay down high-interest credit card debt fast or finance a major purchase without paying interest (or at least more interest than you’d like). In this, it’s not particularly unusual and certainly not worth standing up to take notice.
And the Truist Future card has some real drawbacks. It has no regular rewards program or sign-up bonus, among other deficiencies. I see it as a single-purpose credit card that, after the 0% APR promotional period ends, is worth keeping around only for true emergencies that require you to carry a balance beyond your statement due date.
